Development & safety 'Made in Germany'. Why is this so important?
By using the example of a motorcycle brake lever, we outline the problem with cheap copies from the Far East:
Levers from the Far East are usually without a general operating permit in Germany/Europe. But this is mandatory for the use in German road traffic. Failure to do so will result in the loss of the vehicles‘ operating license. In the event of an accident, the insurance company may refuse to pay any benefits.
Cheap levers from the Far East are merely copies of European brand products. They have not been subjected to any tests, let alone trial fitted to a vehicle. Moreover, the model intended for Europe does not even exist in the Far East.
There is no knowledge of the loads to which the various components are exposed, which is a prerequisite for the correct choice of materials. The danger here is that if the wrong material is chosen, aluminum parts can tear off without warning.
A major risk, however, is that mandatory tolerances are not adhered to. The large number of components in an adjustable lever makes it extremely important that the tolerances determined during the design phase are precisely adhered to during production. If this is not the case, the function of the lever itself, but even worse the function of the brake system, is often not guaranteed.
It can also happen that the brake pump is slightly pressurized due to the lack of tolerances. One millimeter is enough and a compensating bore in the brake pump is closed. This serves to allow the heated brake fluid to expand into the expansion reservoir. If the hole is now closed and the fluid expands, the motorcycle starts to brake very easily and the brake system overheats! Due to the overheating, the brake fluid forms bubbles and therefore no longer builds up pressure. The motorcycle no longer brakes!
On the clutch side, the clutch may not disengage properly. This means that the motorcycle continues to ride even though the clutch is pulled.
This significantly increases wear on the clutch.
As with the brake, the lever on the clutch side can also slip through the adjustment range when the clutch is pulled and the motorcycle “shoots off” as soon as the rider engages the gear. Nobody wants to experience this at a red light!
